HORSE BACK RIDING IN THE EXTINCT PULULAHUA CRATER

The 4000-year dormant volcano of Pululahua is situated in the Andean highlands, some 10 miles north of the capital city of Quito, and just a couple further than the equatorial line. This geographical position combined with its mild climate, its beautiful setting and wide biological diversity make this a real insider trip for tourists and scientists alike. The crater has been declared a protected area and is now a nature reserve.

You will have the opportunity to discover this exciting landscape on horseback, riding right into the furthest corners of the crater, passing by deep gorges, rushing mountain streams yielding warm volcanic springs, eroded lahar fields blooming with wild orchids, deserted chalk mines and tropical mountain forests; it really is quite spectacular.

In addition, Pululahua is the starting point for many interesting rides in the surrounding area, which take you up above the tree line onto the paramo, into lush rain forests of nature reserves or on to the world famous Indigenous handicraft market at Otavalo.

Robust little mountain horses are perfectly suited to this terrain, which as you would expect from the Andes, gets very steep and overgrown in places. Some horses are lively, some laid back, but all of our horses are amiable and easy going, sure-footed and with plenty of stamina.

The tours are lead by an experienced guide who speaks four languages. Whether you opt for an hour's ride, a day trip or a long trek, we warmly invite you to take part in this experience of a lifetime.
